On average, more than 200 people in the United States die every year from Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning produced by non-automotive consumer products. Devices like malfunctioning fuel-burning furnaces, ranges, water heaters, room heaters and engine-powered equipment such as portable generators can create the deadly gas. CO is colorless and odorless which makes it undetectable. Your first line of defense against this deadly gas is a CO Detector Alarm. It is also imperative that the alarm be properly placed. CO gas is heavier than air. This fact makes it vitally important to mount your detector close to the floor. Recently, your FGFD has responded to calls and found some CO detectors mounted on the ceiling. This prevents these devices from being an effective warning tool. Additionally, these devices have a limited life span. Be sure to read the labels and documentation and replace detectors whose lifespan recommendations have expired.
