In the last two days we have had two motor vehicle accidents here in the Glade. On both occasions, uninvolved vehicles approaching the scene did not operate safely, endangering the lives of both the victims and the first responders providing aid.
The FGFD reminds everyone, when approaching an accident scene where first responders are present, it is vital to reduce your speed well before you reach the area. Keep your eyes open for flashing lights, safety cones, or people signaling directions. Lower your speed enough to safely react to unexpected changes, such as responders stepping into the roadway or sudden lane closures.
Tennessee’s Move Over Law requires that when approaching any stationary emergency vehicle with lights flashing, you must make a lane change into a lane not adjacent to that of the vehicle, or proceed with caution by reducing the speed of your vehicle and maintaining a safe speed for the current road conditions
Do not use your phone, take photos, or become distracted by the accident scene. Rubbernecking—slowing down unnecessarily to look at the scene—can cause traffic delays and additional crashes. Keep your attention on the road, your speed, and the signals from safety officials.
Traffic may slow or stop due to the accident. Exercise patience and avoid aggressive driving maneuvers, such as trying to quickly merge or pass. Understand that safety is the priority and delays are sometimes unavoidable.
These simple yet vital steps help protect everyone on the roadway—including you.
Your FGFD First Responders thank you for your attention to this matter.
